Davison freshman Alderson advances

DAVISON — Davison freshman Dylan Alderson, the starting point guard on the boys’ varsity basketball team, has advanced to the second round of the USA Today Ultimate Athlete contest. Voting concludes on Dec. 16 and voters can cast their vote as many times as they like. Alderson is listed in the seventh region of the second round, which will require him to have the highest vote count in the region in order to advance to the final round. Buckeyes get mauled by Kodiaks

BURTON — With a roster that includes Davison’s Shayne Beggs, the University of Michigan-Flint Kodiaks Football Club went 3-5 overall, 2-2 Great Lakes Conference, for 2013. This left UM-Flint in third place in the league behind Miami, 7-0, 4-0, and Wright State, 4-6, 2- 2, but ahead of Ohio State, 6-4, 1-3, and Oakland University, 4-3, 1-3.

Highlights for the season include beating Ohio State 28-13 on their home field at Atherton high school on Nov. 16 and on Oct. 26 the squad won 34-19 at OU. Individually, Jerisk, a junior wide receiver who previously played at Alma College, stepped in at quarterback and ran for a touchdown and threw for another to be named Player of the Game against OSU. — M.S.

Icers undefeated this month

FLINT — In North American Tier III Hockey League action, The Flint Junior Generals defeated the Toledo Cherokee, 4-2, last Saturday at the Perani Arena and Event Center.

Josh Koepplinger scored first for Flint at 14:53 of the opening period on assists by Mark McGee and Justin Fisher. That allowed Jacob Lainesse to give the Junior Generals a 2-0 lead at 4:52 of the second with help from Ryan Burr and Nicholas Gnagni. Koepplinger than made it a three-goal game at 5:49 of the second on a pass from Fisher, only to see Toledo’s Xavier Sudlow finally find a way to stem the tide at 14:53. The two teams then traded scores in the third period as the Cherokee’s Brody Duncan connected at 3:09 prior to Gnagni doing the same for Flint at 15:36. Anders Franke went 24-for-26 in net to earn the decision for the Junior Gens.

Flint, 25-1-2, also won 3-2 in a shootout at Toledo last Friday and next takes the ice at home on Saturday and Sunday against the Cleveland Lumberjacks. — M.S.

Learn a new sport

MT. MORRIS — The Mid Michigan Derby Girls, members of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association Apprentice Program since November 2009, has practices on Monday and Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Skateland Arena, 8460 N. Dort Hwy, where new skaters and referees are welcome for $5. Participants must bring a mouth guard and water bottle, but protective gear and skates can be provided. Membership costs $25 with a T-shirt for the first month and $30 a month after that. Details: www.skatelandarena.com. — M.S.
