The Cardinals traveled to the AA Running Co. End of Summer Classic in Saline on Friday with the boys taking the top spot with 64 points. The girls finished in ninth out of the 14 teams with 260 points.

“The boys ran very well today,” said coach Matt Ames. “They ran very tough on a pretty difficult course. They have put in their summer homework and the results are beginning to show. We are big believers in the expression hard work pays off in our program and you could see that today.”

In the boys’ race, Jacob Turgeon finished sixth in 17:13.4 while David Pinter was eighth in 17:17.8. Nick Sleeman placed 11th in 17:27.2, Cole Davis was 17th in 17:50.4, Greg Smith took 22nd in 18:00.1, Jaxon Evans was 25th in 18:20.7 and Zack Sleeman placed 26th in 18:25.5.

Kyle Pietrus came in 46th in 18:56.7, Bryce Bates was 77th in 20:18.2, Connor McPhee placed 89th in 20:59.0, Michael Shiestel took 94th in 21:13.8, Logan Coughlin was 105th in 21:47.2, Mason McCarty took 107th in 21:49.6 and Shawn Krueger was 128th in 23:18.4.

For the Lady Cards, Victoria Ostrander was 23rd in 20:42.4, Lily Kelsey took 72nd in 22:28.9, Ellie Timmons was 75th in 22:32.2, Katy Calleja placed 89th in 23:12.6, Savannah Sipley was 94th in 23:24.0 and Lindsay Dorman was 119th in 24:25.0. In 124th was Grace Olson in 24:28.2, Megan Martin took 136th in 24:49.8, Abby Schiestel was 167th in 25:55.3 and Ava Mattaway claimed 169th in 25:57.6. — B.P.


The Cardinals put all six golfers in the 40s and placed second in a Saginaw Valley League-South Division jamboree Tuesday at Lapeer Country Club, shooting 178 to finish three strokes behind host Lapeer. Karsen Johnston shot 42, Kamryn Johnston 43, Payton Steinhaus 45, Shelbe Cahill and Evan VandePutte 48 each and Claire Stoddard 49.

Flint Powers Catholic also shot 178 but Davison won the fifth-golfer tiebreaker for second place. Carman- Ainsworth shot 207. Lapeer’s Brooke Gibbons was medalist with a 1-over-par 38.

The Cardinals finished seventh in the NextTee Invitational on Monday, shooting 357 at Katke Cousins on the campus of Oakland University. Kamryn Johnston was 10th individually with 80, while Karsen Johnston tied for 11th with 82. Steinhaus shot 93 and Cahill 102.

Rochester topped the 21-team field with 316. Lauren Ingle of Rochester Hills Stoney Creek was medalist with even-par 72.

The Cardinals finished second in the Lady Cardinal Invitational last Thursday, shooting 353 at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids. Karsen Johnston tied for third individually with 80 as Davison totaled 353. Steinhaus, Evan VandePutte and Claire Stoddard all tied for 13th with 91. Cahill shot 97 and Alex King 104.

Spring Lake won the 11-team tournament with a 321, eclipsing the tournament record of 322 shot by Davison last year. The medalist was Glen Lake’s Nichole Cox, who tied the tournament record with a 69.

The Cardinals will in the Patriot Cup today at The Fortress in Frankenmuth. – D.N.
